Woodworm/Wood Boring Insect Identification & Treatments

At Chemfree, we provide professional inspection and treatment services for woodworm and wood-boring
weevil infestations, helping to protect both structural and non-structural timbers from further damage.
“Woodworm” is the general term commonly used for the larvae of wood-boring beetles, with the
common furniture beetle (Anobium punctatum) being one of the most frequently encountered species in
UK buildings. The adult beetles lay eggs in cracks and crevices in timber, after which the larvae hatch
and spend a prolonged period feeding and tunnelling beneath the surface of the wood. In the case of
common furniture beetle, the larval stage can last around two to four years before pupation and
emergence as an adult, leaving characteristic small exit holes and frass (bore dust). Wood-boring weevils
are another group of beetles capable of damaging timber; their life cycle is generally shorter, around 12
months, and adults can leave characteristic surface channels as they feed.
Infestations are not necessarily active simply because old holes are visible, so our approach begins with
careful inspection to establish the species involved, the extent of the infestation and, importantly, whether
there is evidence of current activity. Where treatment is necessary, methods may include targeted
application of an appropriately authorised timber insecticide by brush, spray or other suitable professional application technique, together with measures to address environmental conditions that may be contributing to the infestation, such as excess moisture, poor ventilation or timber decay. Treatment is selected according to the species, timber construction, accessibility and site conditions rather than applying chemicals unnecessarily. This targeted approach allows Chemfree to achieve effective pest management while reducing the customer's exposure to pesticides wherever practicable.
Our priority is not simply to eradicate the insect but to carry out the work responsibly, professionally and with the safety of the property's occupants in mind. Chemfree will carefully assess the treatment area, explain the proposed works and any necessary precautions before treatment, use only the minimum appropriate amount of product required for effective control, and follow the product label, risk assessment and relevant safety requirements. We also recognise that successful woodworm and weevil control is about protecting the building as well as treating the insect: if left unchecked, established infestations can progressively weaken timber and, in serious cases, compromise structural integrity. By combining accurate identification, targeted treatment, consideration of the property's moisture and ventilation conditions, high standards of workmanship and careful attention to occupant safety, Chemfree aims to provide an effective, proportionate and responsible timber pest management service and always at highly competitive prices.
